How does one juggle school and a campaign? 19-year-old community college student Skyler Johnson tells us how he hopes to flip New York State Senate’s 1st district to make a more equitable state.

Name: Skyler Johnson
Running For: New York State Senate (1st District)
Age: 19

What was the best piece of advice you received before running for office?

I was told to build a campaign plan before beginning, and that was great advice. It allowed me to build a plan before beginning to run, and that was invaluable advice.

Many constituents may dismiss you for your age? How do you overcome their impressions?

While I’m young, I have a firm grasp of the issues, and my understanding of policy appeals to voters. In addition, my large base of support from diverse backgrounds lends credibility to my campaign.

You are currently a student at Suffolk County Community College. How do you balance coursework with campaign work?

I am in constant contact with my professors to make sure I don’t fall behind. In addition, I have used my time at the school to meet new people and learn about the issues.

Republicans outnumber Democrats in your district. What do you see as your path to victory for flipping the seat?

Republicans only outnumber Democrats by a few thousand voters- but even in that case, it is important to consider the Republican advantage. My policy-oriented campaign can motivate Democrats to vote. Certain issues on my campaign are non-partisan, such as my plan to get clean water. No matter your political affiliation, you still need to drink the water. I can appeal to these voters who have struggling with key issues throughout the district.

Some people will try to convince you to push away your youth. It is an important part of your identity, and you should embrace it as part of your run for office.”

Describe what you think New York would look like if you were able to accomplish all your legislative goals in office.

If I was able to accomplish all my goals, we would see a more equitable New York. No one would die because they couldn’t afford healthcare. It would be a state where everyone had equal access to education, and where climate change is actively being fought. Overall, it would be a New York that is designed for everyone.

What advice would you give to another young Democrat considering a run for office?

Embrace your age. Some people will try to convince you to push away your youth. It is an important part of your identity, and you should embrace it as part of your run for office. You have unique experience- don’t discount it.
